Coaching
This isn't for every writer.
When I taught screenwriting at UCLA Extension, I genuinely liked all of my students. But there was always a small handful who connected with me immediately. They weren't looking for another book, course, or set of notes. They wanted a trusted creative partner, someone to challenge their thinking, guide them through uncertainty, and help them write the best screenplay they were capable of.
When I began coaching privately, I decided to work only with those writers.
My Coaching Process
Every screenplay is different. The creative process isn't.
Over three decades, I've refined a nine-step process that takes writers from an initial idea to a screenplay ready for professional feedback. Together we discover your unique strengths, develop a concept worth writing, design the story before you write a single page, build a treatment, gather independent feedback, and revise until the screenplay reflects your vision at its highest level.
At every stage, you know exactly what to work on next. No guessing. No wandering for months. Just steady progress.
Why Coaching Works
Heather came to me after a successful career helping companies become more creative. She had never written a feature screenplay.
Five months later, she shared her script with an experienced Hollywood reader who had no connection to me. He estimated it was the work of someone writing their fifth screenplay. It was her first.
She progressed quickly because she felt safe being vulnerable in our sessions, always knew the next step, received honest feedback before small problems became major ones, and stayed focused on the decisions that mattered most.
"The screenplay I created in Brooks' program gets consistently high ratings from industry pros. One reviewer said it was the best script he'd read in two months. I learned more in 5 months with Brooks that I would have in 5 years on my own."
- Heather McQuaid, Screenwriter
Coaching with me is about more than writing a screenplay. I show you how to write what ONLY YOU can write, at the pro level, in the shortest time possible.
If you're looking for a thoughtful, challenging, and supportive creative partnership, let's start with a strategy conversation. We'll discuss your project, your goals, and whether one-on-one coaching is the right fit.
